Chapter

“Hold on!”

Slenn slammed a large, green button on the car’s dashboard, and Sarah felt herself turn inside out, as if her body had disappeared and she was merely a collection of thoughts. Then she flipped back, taking up more space than before, feeling like a beluga whale being squeezed through a keyhole. The blur in the driver’s seat gripped the steering wheel as they flew.

Then, just as suddenly as they had started, the car flipped again, and they were in a parking lot on Clark Street. Sarah let out a breath that sounded like she was being punched in the stomach. She looked out the window and realized they weren’t at the store yet.

“Why’d we stop?” Sarah said.

“Let’s say we hit an interdimensional construction zone.” Slenn adjusted a couple of levers next to the steering wheel. “Sorry. We’ll have to drive standard for the rest of the way.”

“I know a short cut,” Raya said, pointing to another alley.

“We can’t go there,” Sarah countered. “It’s all alleys and stairs.”

“On it,” Slenn said.

Slenn sped out of the parking lot, veered right, and headed for the top of a cement staircase. Sarah braced for a bumpy ride, but it was like riding a sled. She looked around to see if anyone noticed them, but per usual, if the Chicago drivers and pedestrians did notice, they just didn’t care. They landed at the bottom of the stairs, turned left, and got back on their route.

“You levitated the car, didn’t you?” Sarah said.

“Yerp. I need to replace the shocks on this old thing. If I didn’t levitate, I’d be scraping you two off the awnings of that building.”

“Thank you,” Raya said.

“No prob,” Slenn said. “Can I do anything to help? Send out the Bat Signal or something? I have people who know people. We can find Mr. Greenberg.”

“We think we know who’s behind this, but I appreciate it,” Sarah said.

“Boy, if I ever see those two guys who attacked you, they won’t know what hit ‘em.” Slenn propped their foot on the dashboard as they took another sharp turn, their lime-green Doc Marten leaving an imprint by the speedometer. “Why did they try to hurt you?”

“Retail dispute,” Raya said.

“Ever heard of Zondra Bex?” Sarah grasped the handle by her seat to avoid toppling over onto Raya as Slenn changed lanes.

“Oh yeah. Bad news. Watch out for her. She got sued by some group for illegal surveillance and some shady business dealings. But the whole thing just went away. Very suspicious. Well, here we are!”

Slenn pulled up in front of the store. Sarah’s stomach took a moment to catch up with her, and she swallowed hard.

Slenn turned in their seat to look at them. “Hey, if you need anything, you contact me, okay? I’m good at healing spells, and my Krav Maga teacher says I’m about six lessons away from being somewhat intimidating.”

“Thanks, Slenn. We’ll keep you posted.” Sarah looked around the cab. “Hey, where’s Alvin?”

“Spa day. His nerves were shot.”

“I know the feeling.”

Raya opened the door and got out, holding it open for Sarah.
